Diabetes is a common condition that is spreading rapidly in India. 90 percent of all these cases are type 2 diabetes. It has been claimed that if you have an unusual smell from your mouth, your blood sugar may be high, which means you may have diabetes. Fruity breath odor can be a symptom of diabetic ketoacidosis which can be the first sign of diabetes.
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a process within the body in which a lack of insulin leads to a build-up of harmful ketones in the blood and is an uncommon sign of diabetes. It has been claimed that diabetes can also cause bad breath as the condition can lead to increased glucose levels in the mouth. Bacteria use this glucose as food which later causes infection and gum disease. Gum disease is one of the most common causes of halitosis, which causes bad breath.
Breath smells or tastes like fruit
If the breath smells like fruit or tastes like fruit, it could be a sign of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis can also be the first sign that you have type 1 diabetes. Without enough insulin, your body can't get the energy it needs from glucose, so it uses fat and produces chemicals called ketones. Then when too many ketones accumulate in your blood, they can become harmful to your health. Fruity-smelling breath isn't the only symptom of DKA, however. You may also experience difficulty breathing, reddening of the skin, or vomiting.
A doctor should be consulted immediately
One of the most common symptoms of diabetes is a cut or wound that takes a long time to heal. Excessive thirst is accompanied by excessive urination. If you notice any warning signs or symptoms of diabetes or think you are at risk for diabetes, you should talk to a doctor. Treatment of this condition is very important, otherwise the risk of some life-threatening diseases including heart disease and stroke may increase in the future.
