Ministry of Health is reviewing a combination of HCQ and azithromycin to treat corona patients

The Union Ministry of Health is reviewing the use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine in combination with the antibiotic azithromycin for the treatment of corona virus patients in India.

A revised clinical trial guideline is expected to be released soon. A health ministry official said HCQ treatment is likely to remain part of the protocol but azithromycin is likely to be omitted.

The Ministry of Health is reviewing the evidence for and against HCQ around the world. The ICMR also presented its views on drugs at a recent ministerial meeting and spoke about the treatment of corona with these drugs.

It also included remedivir and favipirvir drugs. HCQ is likely to be continued for the most use in the treatment of corona but with a different combination. The ministry is considering the matter and a decision may be taken soon.

According to the current Clinical Management Protocol of the Ministry of Health, which was revised on March 31 for Corona, the combination of HCQ with azithromycin can be used as per the need of patients with serious illness and ICU management.

The ministry has recommended 400 mg twice a day for hydroxychloroquine experiment, then 200 mg twice daily for four days and 500 mg once daily for five days for azithromycin. However, the combination of both drugs is not for children under 12 years of age and pregnant women.
