The National Technical Advisory Group on Vaccination recommended increasing the interval between two doses of Covishield vaccine to 12 to 16 weeks. The government then implemented it and made the necessary technical changes at the Covin site.

Surprisingly, the day before the decision, the British government reduced the gap between the two doses of the vaccine from 12 weeks to 8 weeks, citing the growing case of Indian covid variant B1.617. In fact what should be the distance between the two doses?

There is a strong belief among Indians that the Government of India is changing the interval between two doses of vaccine not on the basis of scientific reasoning, but because the quantity of vaccine is not available. One of the reasons behind this is that most experts and researchers are of the opinion that a 12 week interval between two doses would increase the potency of the vaccine by more than 80%. However, the Indian government has kept a gap of 12 to 16 weeks.

An American medical expert and White House medical adviser, Dr. Fauchi said in an interview that when India does not have enough vaccines, it makes sense to increase the gap between the two doses and give at least one dose to the maximum number of people. Doing so will not have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the vaccine, he added.

According to a study by the well-known medical journal Lancet, the efficacy of the Covishield vaccine is higher at 3-month intervals than at 6-week intervals. The efficacy of the Covishield vaccine was 55.1 per cent when the six-week interval between the two doses was maintained, while the 12-week interval increased to 81.3 per cent.

The National Technical Advisory Group on Vaccines of India has also enlisted the help of the above study to bridge the gap between the two doses. However the Lancet also recommended a maximum interval of 12 weeks, not 16 weeks.

The chief scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. According to Soumya Swaminathan, some vaccination statistics show that taking a second dose, after an interval of 12 weeks, gives more immunity.

In European Union countries, there is an interval of 12 weeks between two doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, 16 weeks in Spain and 8 weeks in England.
