Hypothyroidism : - If your thyroid gland is not making enough thyroid hormone then you may experience symptoms like fatigue, weakness, chills and weight gain. Without adequate thyroid hormone the metabolism becomes weak and this leads to rapid weight gain.

Menopause: - Some women gain weight during menopause but the reason behind it is not only hormones. As you grow older, your metabolism becomes weaker and you may burn only a few calories. Menopause causes more fat on the waist compared to the hips and thighs.

Lack of sleep: - There are two reasons for weight gain due to lack of sleep. One is that when you wake up late at night you feel hungry and you keep eating anything which increases the calories. Another reason is that sleep deprivation worsens hormone levels and causes hunger at night.

Stress: - Stress causes the body to produce the hormone cortisol which increases appetite. When we are under stress or when we are in a bad mood, we often eat high calorie items which relax the body and improve the mood. It causes inadvertent weight gain.

Antidepressant drugs: - Weight gain due to side effects of some antidepressant drugs. In fact these drugs make some people feel better and they feel very hungry. Inform your doctor if you think that taking these drugs makes you gain weight but never stop taking the drugs on your own. Depression also causes weight changes.

Other drugs: - Some other drugs also work to gain weight. It also includes antipsychotic medications, migraine, high blood pressure and diabetes medications. Tell your doctor about these side effects if you are taking these medications and you are gaining weight. Some women also gain weight by taking birth control pills.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): - Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common hormonal problem in women. In PCOS, small cysts form. It causes irregular periods and acne on the face. This causes fat to grow around the abdomen.

Quitting smoking : - Quitting smoking is very good for health. Weight gain is also seen in the process of quitting smoking but this is very common. After several weeks of quitting smoking, you will no longer feel hungry and lose weight on your own.
