Corona can now also be tested by rinsing, a new method approved by ICMR

New Delhi, 29 May 2021, Saturday

A new method of corona testing has been approved by the Indian Council for Medical Research.

A new method of testing has been discovered by the Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Institute. The institute's teams have also been allowed to conduct such testing in laboratories across the country. According to this method, the patient who needs to be tested needs to spit in a normal collection tube after rinsing with saline water. The sample is then kept in a buffer solution at room temperature in a laboratory. This solution has been developed by the National Environmental Engineering Institute. When it is heated, an RNA template is formed in it. It is then processed for RT PCR.

According to scientists at the National Environmental Engineering Institute, the new system is much cheaper and people can test it themselves. This is because self-testing is allowed in this method. This way people do not have to line up at the collection center and also saves time. The risk of infection is also reduced by not having to stand in line outside the laboratory.

On the other hand it takes more time to take a swab from the nose and throat and some patients also experience discomfort in this method. The test also does not take time after rinsing with tap water. This method can be especially useful in rural areas where there is a lack of testing infrastructure.
