World No Tobacco Day 2023: Know the history and significance of 'World No Tobacco Day'

World No Tobacco Day i.e. World No Tobacco Day is observed every year on 31 May to raise public awareness about tobacco and the harm caused by smoking. The main objective of this is to make the general public aware of the harm caused by tobacco. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, many activities are organized around the world to end tobacco consumption. Under which the public is made aware of the health related harms of tobacco. Tobacco-related diseases kill millions of people every year.

World No Tobacco Day 2023 theme

The main theme of No Tobacco Day this year i.e. 2023 is We Need Food No Tobacco. That means we need food not tobacco. Under this theme, the campaign for production of other nutritious crops instead of tobacco production will be conducted and they will get help from major organizations of the world so that the farmers who produce tobacco can also contribute to more production of food grains in the world.

Deadly tobacco

According to WHO, around 8 million people worldwide die due to diseases caused by tobacco consumption. First No Tobacco Day was celebrated worldwide on 7th April, then in 1988 it was allowed to be celebrated on 31st May after a proposal from WHO. Since then May 31 is being celebrated as No Tobacco Day every year.

Significance of World No Tobacco Day

On World No Tobacco Day awareness is given not only of tobacco but also of diseases caused by the use of tobacco and nicotine products such as bidi, gutkha and cigarettes. Due to high consumption of tobacco and heavy smoking, fatal diseases like cancer take hold of the body due to which the number of deaths is continuously increasing. Tobacco use increases the risk of mouth cancer, throat cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, bladder cancer, colon cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, and cervical cancer. Not only does tobacco use increase the risk of respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and emphysema, but also heart and blood related diseases quickly overtake the body with continuous tobacco use.
