World No Tobacco Day was first observed by the World Health Organization in 1987. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it an epidemic in 1987, with an unexpected increase in deaths due to tobacco-related diseases.

World No Tobacco Day was first observed by the World Health Organization on April 7, 1988, the anniversary of its founding. A date was then set for this day and now World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on 31st May every year.
