An elderly man arrived at the emergency department of Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi with severe chest pain. He did not like anything. Saliva was also coming out frequently. On inquiry by the doctors, it was revealed that the 61-year-old man had swallowed the medicine with aluminum foil, which got stuck in the upper part of the oesophagus. The edges of the foil were so sharp, the slightest force could cause severe damage to the esophagus. The danger was too great. A patient's life could be lost even with a slight mistake. Doctors saved the patient's life with a unique technique.

Two lives saved by a unique method

Doctors used a unique technique to save the patient's life. The tablet was extracted with endoscopic technique. After breaking the tablet in the stomach it dissolved in the stomach, after which the foil was folded in the stomach itself. It was then taken out through the mouth with the help of special accessories. Doctors at the hospital said that they have seen such a case for the second time. In both the cases the patient's life was saved in this way.

The foil punctured the tablet

According to the doctors, when the patient was brought to the emergency room, his condition was very serious. The hospital's head of gastroenterology professor said that if the foil was forcibly removed, the esophagus would have been injured, leading to complications such as bleeding, infection and sepsis, and emergency surgery would have been required. A consultant gastroenterologist and therapeutic endoscopist said that taking out the tablet directly from the esophagus was very dangerous as there was no room for any endoscopic manoeuvring. We slowly pushed the tablet into the stomach with the foil. So we got room for manoeuvring.' Once the pill is inside the stomach, doctors puncture it with a special needle and then inject saline under pressure. This caused the tablet to melt and come out of the foil. When the foil was empty, it was folded and taken out through the mouth.
