Fasting has become very popular these days. This has become a major way to lose weight. There is science behind this and many studies support it, but fasting for limited periods of time is generally considered correct. Prolonged fasting can lead to nutrient deficiency and damage to the body. Fasting can affect blood sugar levels, BP and cholesterol levels. It is important to drink enough water while fasting to avoid dehydration.

Prolonged fasting may decrease body fat but this effect is minimal. Fat will increase when you eat again. Fasting can reduce total body weight but it won't specifically reduce fat, along with fasting you need regular exercise and calorie control. It is not only fasting that will affect the body. Fasting can increase metabolism but it is not the right way to lose fat.

Lose weight in the short term

Fasting can cause rapid weight loss at first but this is mostly water weight. Weight loss after fasting may be steady or rebound. When we eat, more energy is stored in the body as glycogen. This glycogen is stored in our liver and muscles. When you fast, the body first uses this glycogen as energy. When glycogen stores are depleted, the body begins to use fat stores for energy. This is because fasting for long periods of time leads to weight loss but this method is not considered appropriate.

Find out what the research says

According to research, there may be a slight decrease in body fat on fasting for a long time, but for fat loss, regular fasting along with exercise and calorie control are necessary.
