Insurance regulator IRDAI has made a special proposal for companies selling health insurance. The main objective behind doing this is to simplify the Consumer Information Letter (CIS) for health insurance policyholders. One information is to make the CIS simple and easy, as it sometimes contains complex and legal jargon.

The terms of the policy must be explained in simple language

According to the information, insurance companies should ensure that the customer can easily understand the terms of their policy. The director in his circular said that it is important for the policyholder to understand the terms and conditions of the policy purchased, as a policy document can be full of legal complexities, so it should be a document that explains, in simple terms, the basic features related to the policy and provides the necessary information. It should be the kind that is doing.

There are some things to follow while implementing the new format

IRDAI received complaints of information disparity between insurance companies and policyholders. The new CIS format will come into effect from 1 January 2024. There are some things to follow while implementing the new format. Which is as follows.

Insurance companies, intermediaries and agents have to distribute updated CIS to each policyholder by ensuring verification of documents in physical or digital form.

  • CIS can also be sought in his local language if a policyholder so desires.
  • Font size of CIS should be minimum 12 (Arial) or larger.
  • All fields should be made available in the Customer Information Letter (CIS).
  • The policy document should refer to the CIS in the forwarding letter.
  • Health insurance companies are expected to confirm receipt of CIS by the policyholder as per this IRDAI circular.
