Not only O, scientists also made A blood group a universal donor, blood shortage will come to an end

- Scientists succeed in turning A blood group into a universal donor with the help of enzymes in the gut

The O blood group is no longer the only universal donor in the world. Canadian scientists have also made blood group A a universal donor using a special type of bacterial enzyme. This will result in fewer deaths due to blood shortage in hospitals now and more and more patients ’blood needs can be met.

The United States alone requires 16,500 liters of blood per day for emergency surgery, scheduled operations, and routine transfusions. But no blood of any group can be transfused to the patient. Successful transfusion requires that the donor's blood type match the patient's blood type. Scientists have discovered microbes in the human gut that secrete two types of enzymes.

With the help of this enzyme, scientists have turned type-A i.e. A blood group into a universal donor. If this process is successful on a large scale, there will be a big revolution in medical science.

Humans have A, B, AB and O M4 blood types. It is identified by the number of sugar molecules that surround the red blood cell (RBC). If a person has blood group A and is given blood of group B, these sugar molecular particles called blood antigen attack RBC. The immune system stops working and human beings die in severe conditions.

Because blood group O does not have such an antigen, it is still considered a universal donor. It is usually the most sought after in the hospital as there is no time to check the blood group of the victims in case of emergency. Due to this, there is always a shortage of O blood group all over the world but due to this new discovery, scientists will be able to remove the antigens of blood group A.
