One person died on Sunday due to West Nile fever in Thrissur district of Kerala. This is the first case of death due to this mosquito-borne disease in the last three years. The victim was identified as Puthanpurakkal Jobi, 47, a native of Panchcheri in Thrissur district. Kerala Health Minister Veena George has made it clear that there is nothing to worry about. In the year 2019, a 6 year old child died from this fever.

It is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. The disease is transmitted from birds to humans by the bite of an infected Culex mosquito. This is fatal to humans.

According to Who, the first case of West Nile was reported in 1937, when a Ugandan woman became infected with the virus. The virus was first identified in 1953 in the Nile Delta region of northern Egypt.

The virus was also found in crows and pigeons

Many birds in Israel and Uganda then contracted the virus, which led to a new strain of the virus. The virus is transmitted from mosquitoes to birds, and then to humans.

Know what are the symptoms?

People infected with West Nile virus usually have no symptoms or mild symptoms. Common symptoms include headache, fever, skin rash, body aches, neck stiffness, tremors, muscle weakness and paralysis. Symptoms of the virus can last from a few days to several weeks and can go away on their own.

How deadly is this virus?

The virus spreads rapidly in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. If the West Nile virus reaches the brain, it can be dangerous and even fatal.

What is the treatment for this virus?

No vaccine has yet been found for the virus. With general fever medication it can go away on its own in a few days. However, there is still a risk of an increase. To prevent this virus, keep the area around you clean and prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
